Background of the Study
Community participation is a key element in effective language policy formulation, ensuring that policies reflect local needs and cultural realities. In Abeokuta, Yoruba language policy formulation increasingly involves active engagement from community members, educators, and cultural organizations. This participatory approach aims to democratize language planning by incorporating grassroots perspectives into policy development, thereby enhancing the relevance and acceptance of the resulting language guidelines (Ogunleye, 2023). Through public consultations, focus groups, and collaborative workshops, stakeholders contribute ideas and feedback that shape curriculum development, media usage, and cultural programming. Such inclusive practices are particularly important in a city like Abeokuta, where traditional language values coexist with modern influences. This study investigates the extent and effectiveness of community participation in shaping Yoruba language policies, assessing how such involvement influences policy outcomes and the overall vitality of the language (Adeleke, 2024).
Statement of the Problem
Despite efforts to involve communities in language policy formulation, there is limited understanding of how effectively these participatory processes translate into actionable policies in Abeokuta. Challenges such as low participation rates, power imbalances, and inadequate representation may undermine the potential benefits of community input. This study addresses the gap by evaluating the mechanisms of community engagement in Yoruba language policy formulation and identifying factors that facilitate or impede effective participation. The findings will help refine participatory approaches to ensure that language policies are truly reflective of community needs (Ogunleye, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To assess the level of community participation in Yoruba language policy formulation.
To examine the influence of community input on policy outcomes.
To recommend improvements for more inclusive language planning.
